The University Of Miami Athletics
Miami Hurricane football in competition for over of a century now. 4 national championships in an 8 year time frame. This comes to a 50% title average over that time span. Basically, one every other year. By not factoring into a championship since 2001, all eyes are wondering why this great football program has fallen on hard times. A Heisman winner in 1986 & one in 1992. From 1985 to 1994 not a single home loss. The 58 game home winning streak was finally snapped by Washington on September 24th, 1994. A team well known for having their players drafted & drafted high in the NFL Draft. A school that has hired a few famous & Hall Of Fame coaches. Coaches not only great while in Miami but also former coaches in the NFL. One coach that even guided the Dallas Cowboys to back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1992 & 1993. Another head coach of two NFL teams. Another former coach of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. All coaches that are very well known to both the Miami program & also the NFL.
Miami is also known for having several highly touted coaches. Jimmy Johnson(also former NFL head coach) coached the team from 1984-1988. Another former NFL head coach(Dennis Erickson) coached the school from 1989-1994. Butch Davis then followed from 1995-2000. Starting in 2001, a lesser known coach(Larry Coker) was hired. He coached the team through 2006. The current head football coach is Randy Shannon. He’s been at the command since 2007. Miami has appeared in 33 bowl games & have won 18 of those. Their two biggest rivals are Florida State & Florida. There have been many great players come through the University of Miami.
One bad flaw facing Miami is the big brawl that happened back in 2006 in a game versus FIU(Florida International University). The brawl took almost 20 minutes before things got back under control. Due to this brawl, there was 13 Miami players suspended for one game.In addition to a couple previous Heisman winners, Miami also has several other players in the past with awards. There have also been a few coaches to take home awards as well. Miami baseball has been amongst the elite programs since 1973. A whopping 23 appearances in the College World Series. Also, out of those appearances, 4 national championships. The baseball team, like the football, plays in the ACC(Atlantic Coast Conference). However, that didn’t happen until 2004 when Miami switched over from the independent status.
A prestigious baseball program for going on 27 years now. Making 23 College World Series appearances in the past 27 years. Out of those 23 appearances winning a total of four national championships. They have been a member of the ACC for 6 years now after coming over from the ranks of the independents. Winning 2 nation titles in a four year time span. And, also winning two more championships in just a three year time frame.Having the same head coach (Jim Morris) since 1994. Only one other coach (Ron Fraser) has beat him for tenure by coaching for 29 years. They both still have something in common too.
Winning two national championships apiece. One taking the title three years apart & the other two years apart. There are two former Miami greats (Ryan Braun & Par Burrell) currently playing MLB. Also, a current MLB player(A-Rod) that has the current Miami baseball stadium named in his honor. All this due to a generous donation ($3.9 million) 7 years ago. This is news that falls under the radar for the most part.
